Thesis Seminar

Students in the MS/MBA track complete the first three semesters of the MS degree curriculum at ArtCenter; then spend two semesters to complete an intensive version of the Drucker MBA program while continuing studio project work at ArtCenter. After graduating with the MBA degree, students complete their final semester of the MS degree program. The School of Design welcomes students who hold undergraduate degrees in a design-based field and have at least one year of professional experience to apply to our MDes program.

Product Design Thesis Showcase

Spanning four semesters over the course of two years, the MDes program will challenge how you perceive the roles design can and should play in aiding various forms of interactions throughout society. Each semester you will encounter thoughtfully aligned seminars, studios, and labs that equip you with important knowledge and skills to aid your development as a design leader. Through individual and team-based projects that focus on the design of services or social innovation concepts, you’ll explore design principles, approaches, theories, and tools that are essential for designing for interactions. You may also take advantage of CMU’s stature as a renowned liberal arts research university to pursue research opportunities with faculty and take courses across campus to broaden and deepen your education. Even though designers typically work in service of others and respond to specific prompts, we recognize the importance of your unique interests.

The thesis is complemented by a required second-year seminar, elective coursework in the School of Design, and other departments across the Carnegie Mellon campus. In the second year, you'll conduct intensive research that aligns with an appropriate design process and culminates in a design project that addresses your research question. Throughout the process you’ll participate in public sharing sessions of thesis work and give and receive feedback to further your inquiry and understanding.

You can peruse master’s theses from students in the School of Design online at KiltHub. We practice a broadly applicable creative process to produce solutions that are founded on the understanding of human needs and aspirations so that designers and organizations can be resilient and grow. We recognize that it is important for the field of design to evolve in alignment with the needs of society and technological advancements.

Degree Programs

Definitely spend time finding and contributing to communities that you share interests with. They helped me feel like part of something greater than myself, and gave me a much-needed break from the academics! The Master of Design (MDes) program requires nine core courses and three electives (see below) for a minimum of 38 credits for the degree.

I’d recommend many extracurricular activities to give you yet another strength, undergraduate research assistantship positions to build your inquiry skills and connect with faculty members, and definitely any project-based learning opportunities. My Ph.D. from the University of Michigan is an interdisciplinary degree, crossing the boundaries of many disciplines. This gave me the edge to be able to connect concepts, theories, and applications, and to communicate with people with deep disciplinary knowledge using their terminology. The degree I earned at U-M gives me the agility in looking at these problems from diverse perspectives and pose solutions that cannot come from one single disciplinary background.

We collectively cast a broad net, so you’re likely to find people who share your interests. Likewise, students bring their diverse backgrounds and professional experiences to our programs. As a member of our graduate cohort, you’ll learn how to work effectively in a team by leveraging connected interests, sharing unique knowledge and skills, and benefiting from the group’s collective wisdom. In this track, students focus on development of creative design skills and the practice of strategic innovation methods that take a systems-level view, and that considers the business, technological and human aspects of any challenge. Students are prepared with visual design skills and the knowledge, theories and methods they’ll need to take on the types of unstructured problems that industry continually faces.

Our diverse alumni populations continue to lead and evolve design at the cross sections of human behavior, technology, manufacturing, aesthetic and more. Earn an MA in Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere; a studio-intensive MFA Art featuring critical exchange and curator collaboration; or a studio-based MFA Design degree focused on contemporary practice. With no requirement to specialize in a medium, you can focus on what’s relevant to your needs and interests. The Environmental Design Library is one of the premier architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning libraries in North America. To apply to any of our Master's, Doctoral, Professional Studies Diploma, and Graduate Certificate programs, complete and submit the New School Online Application. To be a premier public research university, providing access to educational excellence and preparing citizen leaders for the global environment.

In addition, the School of Design invites you to participate in Confluence, our annual career event held each spring to support students in their internship and employment searches. Design is a highly interactive and transdisciplinary endeavor that is integral to the success of businesses and organizations worldwide. Leaders in the field increasingly collaborate to develop products, services, and systems that significantly impact ways of life, which places great responsibility on designers. In the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon, we understand the important roles that design can and should play in the world. Carefully considering the implications of our actions, we practice a values-centered approach to design and strive to develop thoughtful solutions to improve the quality of life for people and the planet, today and in the future.

In addition to Grad ID studio class work, students in the MS track also take elective classes in the second half of the program to extend their experience and build their portfolio through projects in collaboration with students and faculty in other departments at ArtCenter. The faculty in our Industrial Design master's program are internationally renowned educators and professionals. Students work in a design studio environment where they’re encouraged to create with a consciousness that their designs will exist and have impact in a larger context. Through a broadly applicable creative process we call strategic innovation, you’ll learn how to analyze complex challenges, discover key insights and envision how people will experience innovative products and services for propelling organizational growth. All applicants are required to submit a portfolio that demonstrates their creative and technical proficiency. Portfolios are expected to include both images and supporting text and should convey the context from which the project arose and the lens through which to understand and critique the work.
